Travel Itinerary

The First Day - Traversing from Moshi to Machame Entrance (1790m) up to Machame Base (3010m)

Our adventure kicks off with a scenic one-hour drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, where we handle the necessary park formalities, meet our team of porters, and officially embark on our ascent. The initial stretch of the Machame Route leads us through a stunning, thick rainforest. This part of the trail receives fewer visitors, so the path may be a bit overgrown in spots, and the ground tends to be damp and muddy, adding an element of excitement to our journey. As we traverse this segment, hikers will immerse themselves in the lush, lively rainforest ecosystem, teeming with a diverse array of plant and animal species. The climb is of moderate difficulty, allowing us to acclimatize gradually as we steadily progress upwards. Distance covered: 10.8 km / 6.7 miles Approximate duration: 6 hours.

The Second Day - From Machame Camp at an altitude of 3010m to Shira Camp situated at 3845m

Our journey continues as we hike through the dense rainforest, gradually making our way towards the steep slope leading up to the Shira Plateau. This part of the trek showcases a significant shift in landscape, transitioning from the flourishing forest to more open, rocky terrains as we approach the plateau. As we progress, the vistas become more vast, offering breathtaking views of the towering peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching the Shira Plateau, adventurers are treated to awe-inspiring sights of the mountain's higher slopes, where the rugged terrain transforms into a barren, alpine environment. From this viewpoint, one can also admire the magnificent sight of Mount Meru, proudly rising above Arusha town in the distance. The contrast between the two mountains is truly remarkable, making it a special moment to pause and appreciate the beauty of the surroundings. Distance covered: 5.4 km / 3.4 milesApproximate duration: 5 hours.

The third day - From Shira Cave at an elevation of 3845m to Barranco Camp at 3960m

Today, we will venture into the high moorland of Mount Kilimanjaro, where the scenery undergoes a remarkable transformation. The terrain shifts to a more rugged and expansive environment, as the once dense rainforest transforms into sparse vegetation and rocky formations. Our journey along the southwest side of the mountain will take us beneath the striking presence of the Lava Tower, a prominent volcanic formation that looms over the landscape. Continuing our ascent along the final stretch of the Western Breach, a renowned and demanding section for climbers, we will be met with physically challenging but awe-inspiring vistas of the mountain's raw magnificence and the surrounding terrain. After a full day of trekking at high altitude, we will reach our camp where we can unwind and rejuvenate. Distance covered: 10.8 km / 6.7 miles. Approximate duration: 8 hours.

The Fourth Day - From Barranco Base (3960m) to Barafu Base (4640m)

Today's adventure kicks off with a descent into the vast Great Barranco, a formidable gorge that slices through the mountain's terrain. Upon reaching the base, our next challenge awaits: scaling the imposing Great Barranco Wall, a rugged and steep ascent that stands between us and the southeastern slopes of Kibo. Though not technically difficult, this climb demands endurance and grit to conquer its lengthy and strenuous path. As we make our way up the wall, we are rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the shimmering glaciers around us, such as the Heim and Kersten glaciers that sparkle under the high-altitude sun. Once we triumph over the Barranco Wall, our journey leads us onward to the Karanga Valley, our final chance to refill our water supplies before pushing towards the summit. The landscape transforms gradually, with scree and loose rocks dominating the terrain, painting a more barren and desolate scenery as we approach our next destination.Distance covered: 8.5 km / 5.3 milesApproximate duration: 8 hours.

Fifth Day - From Barafu Basecamp to Uhuru Summit and then descending to Millennium Camp

Our adventure kicks off around midnight, shrouded in darkness, as we tackle the most challenging and exciting phase of our journey to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. The initial climb is steep, and over the next 4 to 5 hours, we navigate scree slopes, steadily progressing in altitude over a short distance. This leg of the journey demands physical exertion, but the payoff is swift elevation gain and stunning panoramic vistas as we ascend. We find ourselves surrounded by magnificent ice cliffs within the crater, with awe-inspiring views of the jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond. After an additional hour of trekking, we reach the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). Our descent begins as we retrace our steps to Stella Point before making our way down the scree slope and trail back to Barafu Camp for a well-deserved breakfast. Finally, we continue our descent to Millenium Camp. Distance covered: 13.4 km / 8.3 miles. Estimated duration: 12 – 15 hours. As the first light of day starts to illuminate the horizon, we will arrive at the crater rim at Stella Point (5,739 meters) just as the sun begins its ascent.

The Sixth Day - Hiking from Millennium Camp (3790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m)

Following the exhilarating ascent to the summit, our final day on Mount Kilimanjaro will be spent descending through the vibrant rainforest at a more leisurely pace. Today's trek will be gentle as we make our way down to Mweka Gate, where we will handle the necessary park formalities. The rainforest offers a serene and rejuvenating contrast to the challenges faced at high altitudes, with its refreshing coolness, shaded paths, and diverse plant life. Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, we will receive our well-deserved certificates, serving as a proud symbol of your remarkable accomplishment in conquering Africa's highest peak. These certificates will be cherished mementos of the journey, serving as a constant reminder of the incredible adventure you have just completed. Once the formalities are finished, we will be greeted by our vehicles to begin the journey back to Moshi. The return trip to the hotel will provide a moment to contemplate the extraordinary experiences and achievements of the past days. Distance covered: 12.1 km / 7.5 miles Approximate time: 6 hours.
